Dreaming of Hell
The First Dream
When I was younger, I had a dream that terrifyingly embedded itself into my mind for years to come. The dream began as normal as any dream can, until suddenly, everything turned pitch black. It was such an empty, hollow blackness, a never ending void with nothing able to be seen before you or around you. And from that desolate pit, I heard the whisper, “It’s too late.”
It was hell. Without a doubt, I knew I had gone to hell.
And while I knew and know that hell is far worse than that, it was enough for me.
It’s too late. No second chances. No extra lives. That was it. To have known better and to have missed it. To have had the chance and lost it. It’s too late.
Pain and suffering aside, I cannot think of a more tormenting punishment than to know how final and irrevocable death truly is.
The Second Dream
But then, nearly two decades later, I dreamed of hell again.
This time, I was on my way to heaven. I was moving down a type of portal to an entrance similar to curtains being drawn. Yet something inside me felt a hesitancy, a “What if this isn’t really heaven?”
And that is when the curtains of the portal opened, and it was not the gates of heaven after all. It was the mouth of hell. And this time, the words that came to me were, “The path is more narrow than you think.”
Again, I had my chance and missed it. Jesus Himself had warned us of this, yet I still didn’t take it for what it was. And now, it was too late.
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. – Matthew 7:13-14
Deceive Not Yourselves
In the book of Acts, the power of the Holy Spirit was very prevalent in the apostles, particularly Paul, whose handkerchief alone was able to cast out demons and heal the sick. As the Jewish exorcists heard of these miracles, they too began to attempt the same work of casting out spirits in the Name of the Jesus whom Paul preached about.
But the evil spirit replied, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
The spirit then leapt upon the men and overpowered them before the men ran out naked and wounded.
As this story shows, knowing the Name of Jesus is not always truly knowing Him. You must believe in Him, follow Him, and live for Him.
Even Jesus warned in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
In verses 22-23, He continues, “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’”
The Bible warns us, “Deceive not yourselves.” If there is even a chance that you may hear the words, “It’s too late” or “The path is more narrow than you think”, what would you aim to do differently while you can?
Examine Yourself
What is in your life right now that is keeping you from eternity with Your Father, Your Savior?
Sexual immorality? Drunkenness or drunken partying? Hate? Jealousy? Contention? Selfishness? Putting anything else before God? This list goes on! And the Bible makes it clear that having these things in your life costs you your inheritance to the Kingdom of God! (See 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Galatians 5:19-21, Ephesians 5:5)
These are the things of the world. These are for those who are lost. The lost are always out there looking for anything that will fill their void.
“To a hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet.” – Proverbs 27:7
And just as the lost are never satisfied, neither is hell.
“Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.” – Proverbs 27:20
Whether we want to admit it or not, hell is not just filled with the most evil criminals you can imagine. Hell is not made up of purely murderers and rapists. Hell is very much overflowing with people just like you and me.
We can only pray that we escape that fate. And that means praying for forgiveness. It means being washed in the blood, sanctified, and justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Repent, before it’s too late. Repent, because the path is more narrow than you think. Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
– 2 Corinthians 13:5
