Read His Word
Have you read your Bible today?
Are you patting yourself on the back because you got your “verse of the day” in?
No, I mean, have you delved into the Word today?
We speak to God all the time, and the Bible is one of His best ways of speaking back to us. The Bible is the Word of God. Take a second to really grasp that fact that God Himself breathed these specific words into existence, and they still stand today. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and His Word applies just as much now as it did a hundred years ago as it did at the time it was written.
Personally, as a writer, I want my words to be read. I am writing them with the grand hopes of reaching and helping everyone I can. I’m not God, but I’m pretty sure that was why the Bible was written, too.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12
We already know the Bible speaks to our spirit, but pay attention to the detail of that scripture. The word of God, differentiating from the joints, pierces the marrow. The marrow – the very core and essence of our being. Did you know the marrow in your body is where your blood cells are produced? The word of God is so powerful that it reaches the very life within us.
“But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ””
– Matthew 4:4
We cannot live without the Word of God!
In 2 Timothy 3:14-17, Paul stresses the importance of the Scriptures. He speaks clear simple words. To be wise in Christ, we must continue to study the Scriptures. The Scriptures come from God for the purpose of learning, teaching, correcting, and training. We must know the Scriptures in order to be able to face the things of this world. We must read them to understand how we should live, how we should treat others, and how we should glorify God’s kingdom.
If you struggle to find the time or focus to read the Bible, try incorporating it in different ways. You can watch videos on the internet with Bible verses or even about books of the Bible. You can listen to audio versions on the way to work or while you go for a walk. Download a Bible app and start a reading plan. Once you start, you will find that God wants to show you more and more.
Some of us say we don’t read, or we cant understand it, but just like with any struggle in our lives, ask God for His help with that. His Word clearly says He will give wisdom freely to those who ask for it. If our will lines up with His, He will give us the desires of our heart. If we desire to read His Word more and desire the wisdom that comes with it, I’m pretty sure God will answer that prayer in ways you never imagined. Just know, like with anything, it may involve practice and discipline.
If you love Me, you will keep my commandments.
How can we be obedient to keeping God’s commandments if we don’t study what they are? How can we learn to live like people of God if we don’t read the examples of others that He set before us in His Word? History repeats itself. Do you not think that stays true even back to the beginning? How can we expect to receive answers from God if we don’t seek the words He breathed for us?
He doesn’t just want us to skim over a devotion a day. He wants us to meditate on the Bible day and night. It is understanding. It is direction. It is comfort. It is life.
Ask God to reveal Himself to you in His Word. Ask Him for the desire to grow closer to Him through the Scriptures. The Bible is a gift to us. Let us continually show Him our appreciation by putting this irreplaceable gift to good use.
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
– Isaiah 55:11

I personally have come to love reading the Bible more than I ever have. It started out slow because I didn’t know where to begin, so I prayed for God to show me how to study the Bible. My favorite is using a Life Application Chronological Study Bible and learn in order of how it happened. There are lots of notes and background into the history and it has really helped me connect peoples stories to my own life. It’s doesn’t seem so foreign.

I really enjoy learning the chronological order as well! I felt so foolish when I realized how much was already going on in the world at the same time the events in the Bible were taking place. It’s fascinating to study that way!

Thank you April, this was such a timely word for me. So easy to get so busy building our life that we forget what is the true source of LIFE! Thank you for this reminder!!
